With her eyelids and her tresses, O lovesick one,

the great dark host has come to her aid.

How long will you complain of a droop of her eyelid,

and how long protest the tyranny of her tresses?

Turn to praise: he is the most rewarding subject

of praise; and if you seek learning, he is most learned.

O judge of judges, my wife has resolved,

at midmonth, to complain and lay down the law.

She said, “At mid-Sha‘ban, have we nothing

for the mouth to taste and savor?”

I answered her, “Go: not half a coin will be yours

unless he comes to our aid—nor a dirham mine.”
