ظفرت على رغم الرَّقيب بطيفها
وقدand already طردتhad chased خلفafter الثرياthe Pleiades النعائمthe Ostriches (stars)
وقد طردت خلف الثريا النعائم
Despite the watcher, I won a visit from her dream-phantom,
Despite the guard, I attained her silhouette
And the Ostriches had chased after the Pleiades.
As the doves were driven away behind the chandelier
فياso, ah! لرقيبٍfor a watcher ليسnot يرزقis granted نظرةa glimpse
فيا لرقيبٍ ليس يرزق نظرة
وآخرand another يأتيcomes رزقهhis allotted share وهوwhile he نائمasleep
وآخر يأتي رزقه وهو نائم
Ah, a watcher who is granted not a glimpse,
Oh, a guard who is not granted a glance
And another whose share comes to him while he sleeps!
While another comes upon his fortune asleep
