متّعdelight لواحظناour eyes التيwhich أضنيتهاyou made languish
متّع لواحظنا التي أضنيتها
لماwhen اتخذتَyou took إلىtoward البعادseparation سبيلاa path
لما اتخذتَ إلى البعاد سبيلا
Delight our eyes, which you left languishing
The eyes that longed for your return are delighted,
When you took a path toward separation.
When you set out on your journey into the distance.
وأعدand restore بعودكwith your return للعيونto the eyes منامهاtheir sleep
وأعد بعودك للعيون منامها
فلقدfor indeed ترحّلit departed يومthe day رمتyou intended رحيلاdeparture
فلقد ترحّل يوم رمت رحيلا
And with your return restore sleep to the eyes,
And promise that you will return to the eyes their sleep,
For it departed the day you meant to leave.
For the day you left was sorrowful.
أولاor not فنظرتهاfor their gaze إليكat you ألذّsweeter منthan
أولا فنظرتها إليك ألذّ من
عودthe return of المنامsleep ولوeven though جفتهthey forsook it طويلاfor a long time
عود المنام ولو جفته طويلا
Or do not—for their gaze at you is sweeter than
At first your gaze was sweeter to me than
Sleep's return, even though they long forsook it.
The return of sleep, even if prolonged.
ياO قادماًone who has come أقسمتI have sworn لوif قسمapportioned الورَىmankind
يا قادماً أقسمت لو قسم الورَى
حُرّthe smooth part of الخدودthe cheeks لهto him لكانit would surely be قليلاlittle
حُرّ الخدود له لكان قليلا
O you who have come, I swear: were mankind to apportion
O you who returns, I swear that if the cheeks
Their smooth cheeks to him, it would be too little.
Swore an oath, it would be minimal.
أهلاًwelcome بقربكto your nearness فهوfor it is كحلkohl نواظرeyes
أهلاً بقربك فهو كحل نواظر
كمhow often راقبتthey watched for منfrom نحوthe direction of أرضكyour land ميلاa kohl-stick
كم راقبت من نحو أرضك ميلا
Your nearness is welcome, for it is kohl for eyes

That so often watched for a kohl-stick from your land.

صحّتrecovered بكthrough you الأيامthe days حتَّىso that ماnot يرىsees
صحّت بك الأيام حتَّى ما يرى
متأمّلan observer إلاexcept النسيمthe breeze عليلاailing
متأمّل إلا النسيم عليلا
Through you the days recovered, so nothing is seen
The days prospered with you, until none would see
By an observer to be ailing but the breeze.
An observer except for a gentle breeze.
