إن بخلْتم عليَّ بالملحوظ
Delight me with the sound of a promise from you,
Delight me with a promise I can hear,
if you begrudge me the sight of you.
Lest you stingily deny what I hold dear.

من ذوي اللوم كلّ فظٍّ غليظ
And rescue a tender heart that suffers
And give succor to a tender heart that bears
at the hands of every coarse, harsh reproacher.
Each harsh and cruel word that blame ensnares.

My ear has spat out reproach against you;
My ears heard censure that to you appealed—
for to it, that is among the most hateful things uttered.
Though it was hateful, I did not yield.

Keeping a pledge spreads fragrance in love;
A pact forgotten spreads in love no cheer,
and strange is something preserved for one who is lost.
Yet strangely binds the faithless and sincere.
