Welcome to them, the pages of the imam, the transmitter of traditions,

Radiant with praise today and tomorrow.

Their letters strut through the kingdom of eloquence,

And our letters around them are like slaves.

O their verse, served after their composer,

How many servants you have in sound, guiding judgment!

How many choice, peerless gems lie in your letters!

Yet for our eyes they are like antimony kohl.

Their lights, their splendor, and their faithfulness

Are for the gatherer, the beholder, and the seeker of gifts.

And a word-inscribed scroll—early at its door came

A cave of refuge, visited by praise evening and morning,

From every rhyme, whose opener finds a mouth

So sweet that, tasting it, you say, 'More!'

And it is as though the names of those assembled

Within them were lamps shining in a mosque.

    تصفى قعودهما بفضلِ محمد

    So grant leave to their composer and their Ibrahim;

Their sitting together is purified by Muhammad's grace.

    يروي الإجازة سيدٌ عن سيد

    Our authorization was requested for them and for their like;

A master transmits the authorization from a master.

And yes, I have authorized them to transmit what they sought,

Subject to the condition—words I authorized and reports with chains,

And writings with which I am not content:

Some of them drafted, and some undrafted.

I left aside what I wished of them, and to some

I cried, 'Do not perish of grief; be steadfast!'

Take it as authorization from one obedient to you, a reciter

Of praise—so marvel at the authorizer who recites!

And forestall him with a plain excuse, for I have

A prolonged sorrow: if I speak, it says, 'Be brief.'

My pen and my speech both turn away:

'No' from my tongue if I speak, and 'no' from my hand.
