يوم الوفا يا سيد الأحباب
فأدرso pass around كؤسَcups of الفضلbounty والآدابand refinement
فأدر كؤسَ الفضل والآداب
The day of fidelity, O master of beloved friends!
So pass around the cups of bounty and refinement.
وإذاand when ذكرتyou remember الصاحبthe companion النائيthe faraway فقلthen say
وإذا ذكرت الصاحب النائي فقل
عقبىmay the outcome be اللقاreunion ياO سيدmaster of الأصحابthe companions
عقبى اللقا يا سيد الأصحاب
And when you remember the faraway companion, say:
May reunion come next, O master of companions!
ياO سعدSaʿd دينfaith of اللهGod عشlive متمتعاًenjoying yourself
يا سعد دين الله عش متمتعاً
أماindeed بكسبthrough earning ثناpraise وكسبِand earning ثوابreward
أما بكسب ثنا وكسبِ ثواب
O Saʿd of God's faith, live in delight,
indeed, through earning praise and earning reward.
ياO جابراًmender of قلبيmy heart بنجحthrough the fulfillment of مقاصديmy aims
يا جابراً قلبي بنجح مقاصدي
حتىeven إذاwhen كاتبنهthey (feminine) corresponded with him بجوابwith a reply
حتى إذا كاتبنه بجواب
O you who mend my heart by fulfilling my aims,
even when they wrote to him with a reply:
شعرverse بشعرwith verse فائقsurpassing معهwith it ندًىbounty
شعر بشعر فائق معه ندًى
وافٍabundant فياso, oh فوزيmy triumph بكسبthrough the profit of مُرابيa usurer
وافٍ فيا فوزي بكسب مُرابي
verse for surpassing verse, accompanied by bounty
abundant—oh, my triumph in a usurer's profit!
نِعْمٌfavors علىupon نِعمfavors تكادalmost يغيظنيhe vexes me
نِعْمٌ على نِعم تكاد يغيظني
بالمطلby delaying فيهاin them مازحthe jester among الكتابthe scribes
بالمطل فيها مازح الكتاب
Favors upon favors—he almost vexes me
by delaying them, that jester among the scribes.
قالواthey said الحسابthe accountants فقلتso I said عادةthe custom of قومهhis people
قالوا الحساب فقلت عادة قومه
أعطىhe gave علىthrough يدهمtheir hand بغيرwithout حسابreckoning
أعطى على يدهم بغير حساب
They said, 'The accountants'; I said, 'His people's custom:
he gave through their hands without reckoning.'
