And a woman toys with a man's soul; onward moves

love for her, as the little rook moves.

The bird of the tormented heart was snared

with her mole's seed, by her temple-lock—a tiny trap.

both edges of her cheek with blood shed by him.

An emir: no petitioner is left empty-handed

in his presence, nor can the proud swagger.

He judged justly: no eye, through injustice,

looks askance, nor is any nose raised in pride.

I praised God when there appeared before my eyes

a Shurayh in judgment, and my peer in years.

A youth on a day of generosity or battle,

and an elder on a day of learning and counsel.

For his fingers' bounty is a sea of sweet water,

while the bounty of others' fingers is bitter brine.
