قاضي قضاة الدين دمْ في علىً
لاmay not تلحنerr grammatically الأيامthe days فيin رفعهاraising it
لا تلحن الأيام في رفعها
Chief judge of the faith, remain in high station;
Judge of the judges of religion, a tear on a cheek
may the days make no grammatical error in raising it.
The days do not make mistakes in raising it
وانظرْand look بنعماكwith your bounty إلىat حالِthe plight of ذيone afflicted with
وانظرْ بنعماك إلى حالِ ذي
ضرورةdire need يعجزis unable عنto دفعهاward it off
ضرورة يعجز عن دفعها
And look with your bounty upon the plight of one
And look with your blessings at the state of one
in dire need, unable to ward it off.
With necessity that cannot be warded off
قدalready أدبرَhas passed الصومthe fast وليand I have مقلةan eye
قد أدبرَ الصوم ولي مقلة
ماnot نظرتhas seen قطever سوىother than دمعهاits tears
ما نظرت قط سوى دمعها
The fast has passed, and I have an eye
The fast has departed, and I have little
that has never seen anything but its own tears.
That I have never seen except its tears
