I bade your door farewell, not with the farewell of one who hates,

O you whose lofty rank I praise in dictated compositions.

O you, my praises of whom spread, until they thronged

Across east and west—my short poems and my long.

Mine is the life of one absorbed in his favors,

Even if mine is not the life of an idler.

O you who grant me the choicest gifts, racing ahead,

Before my hopes had even raced toward them.

O you whose nearness eases my life—for indeed

I have displayed, by way of distinction, the image of my state.

O you whose bounty my grown sons espied,

So they sought a share unbidden, since you had brought my little ones to maturity.

Live on, O Ibn Fadl Allah, in the jewels of praise

And reward—how many glories have been led to him as brides!

This bounty of yours is necklaces for necks; or

This praise of you is the seals of deeds.

If I journey on, I shall not find your equal among mankind,

I swear; nor will praise of you find my equal.
