جدتم بما قلَّ عن ظنوني

جدتم بما قلَّ عن ظنوني

فزاد في لوعتي وهُلكي

فزاد في لوعتي وهُلكي

You generously bestowed what fell short of my expectations,

You gave what fell short of my expectations,

and thus added to my anguish and my undoing.

and so it added to my anguish and ruin.

لا لذَّة اليسر في حماكُم

لا لذَّة اليسر في حماكُم

نلت ولا لذَّة التشكِّي

نلت ولا لذَّة التشكِّي

Neither the delight of ease under your protection

Neither the pleasure of ease under your protection

did I attain, nor the delight of lament.

did I attain, nor the pleasure of complaining.
