أقول لنظَّام المحامد يمّموا
مقامthe residence ابنIbn (son of) شادٍShadi فيin دمشقDamascus ومغناهand his abode
مقام ابن شادٍ في دمشق ومغناه
I say to the composers of praise: make for
the residence of Ibn Shadi in Damascus and his abode.
معاليthe glories المقامof the court الأفضليّAfdali مقيمةٌabiding
معالي المقام الأفضليّ مقيمةٌ
وأمداحهand his praises سيَّارةٌtraveling far وعطاياهand his gifts
وأمداحه سيَّارةٌ وعطاياه
The glories of the Afdali court abide,
while his praises and his gifts travel far.
لئنeven if نزلتhas withdrawn عنfrom بلدةٍa city يدُthe hand ملكهof his dominion
لئن نزلت عن بلدةٍ يدُ ملكه
فماyet not نزلتhas descended منfrom بلدةthe city of الأفقthe horizon علياهhis eminence
فما نزلت من بلدة الأفق علياه
Though the hand of his dominion has withdrawn from a city,
yet his eminence has not descended from the horizon’s city.
