O our master, Fulan al-Din, be gentle

Toward my weakness, my peacefulness, and my seclusion.

    بحقِّك لا تكن عون الليالي

    I hoped for help from you against the nights;

By your honor, do not become the nights’ ally.

Indeed, by God, it never crossed my mind

To speak disparagingly of you, nor entered my thoughts.

And how could I, when you outstrip all mankind,

And it suffices me to recite your praise,

And that you are the finest of those I have chosen as companions,

When companions have become like a mirage.

And between our qualities lies a close-knit kinship,

    Of letters, embroidering our virtues.

Were the slanderers to show compassion for a weak man,

They would then testify to my gratitude and regard.

May God protect you; reconsider your opinion of me,

And do not nullify the rights of a loyal young man.

And suppose I had erred—then favor me

With forbearance: it is a means to eminence.

    تُفد سنن الطريق ولا تبالي

    And close an eye if a friend does wrong;

You will learn the road’s true course, and need not worry.

Yes, conceal a fault, even if it is like the sun,

For all of us are destined to pass away.
