Wasting sickness conveyed from my heart
the tale of longing and burning grief.
وحياتكمby your lives ماnot ضلّerred فيin
وحياتكم ما ضلّ في
نقلrelaying الحديثthe tale ولاnor غوىwent astray
نقل الحديث ولا غوى
By your lives, it did not err in
relaying the tale, nor go astray.
آهاًah! علىfor العيشthe life الذيthat
آهاً على العيش الذي
بيدby the hand of الفراقseparation قدalready انطوىwas folded away
بيد الفراق قد انطوى
Ah, for the life that
has been folded away by separation’s hand!
ماhow كانَwas أسرعswift ماnominalizing particle انقضىit ended
ما كانَ أسرع ما انقضى
وحصلتand I gained منهfrom it علىupon الهوىlove
وحصلت منه على الهوى
How swiftly it came to an end,
and from it I gained love.
عجباًhow strange! لمثليَfor one like me ماnot علىagainst
عجباً لمثليَ ما على
نأيthe distance of الحبيبthe beloved لهhe has قوىstrength
نأي الحبيب له قوى
How strange that one like me, against
the beloved’s distance, has no strength!
يقوىhe has strength لنبلagainst the arrows of الراشقيthe archers (continued)
يقوى لنبل الراشقي
نcompletes 'the archers' وليسyet he does not يقوىhave strength للنوىagainst separation
ن وليس يقوى للنوى
He withstands the arrows of the archers,
yet cannot withstand separation.
