Nights have smiled with good fortune and bliss,

Like rain's mouth smiling through the clouds' dusky lips.

And revived for eastern Syria a time of joy,

When the eyelids' slumber is banished from the West.

God be praised for festivities, to whose joy there hastened—

And to whose gathering—the men of battalions and books!

And for sweet songs that set us swaying, as though they

Went round among drinkers with tambourines for goblets.

And for the torment of enviers, and the bounty of a feast!

Thus let the man of good fortune and plenty give a feast.

What you have attained gladdens my heart, though it

Will find solace in the household for not seeing friends.

Yet far be it from you that anything should distract you from greatness,

Or from those seeking your bounty, far and near.

Are you not of the people whose hands

And forbearance are like water to the earth and hills?

I alighted upon their bounty, and it was as though

I had lodged with the house of al-Muhallab, such was their care.

    فلما تلاقينا عتبتُ على العتب

    And I had a grievance against Time and humankind;

But when we met, I reproached reproach itself.

So may Qutb al-Din ever remain their central jewel,

And a full moon of glory among the Faraqid stars and shooting stars.

Our fair hope revolves around his eminence,

And no wonder, if the orbit runs true about the pole.
