ياO لهفَanguish of قلبيmy heart علىfor عبدservant of الرَّحيمthe All-Merciful وياand O
يا لهفَ قلبي على عبد الرَّحيم ويا
شوقيmy longing إليهfor him وياand O شجويmy sorrow وياand O دائيmy affliction
شوقي إليه ويا شجوي ويا دائي
Oh, my heart’s anguish for Abd al-Rahim, and oh,
O my heart's yearning for Abdur Rahim
my longing for him, and oh, my sorrow, and oh, my affliction!
And my longing for him, and my love-sickness, and my pain
فيin شهرِthe month of كانونَKanun (a winter month) وافاهُcame to him الحمامُdeath لقدindeed
في شهرِ كانونَ وافاهُ الحمامُ لقد
أحرقتَyou have burned بالنارِwith fire ياO كانونُKanun (also meaning brazier) أحشائِيmy entrails
أحرقتَ بالنارِ يا كانونُ أحشائِي
In the month of Kanun, death came to him; indeed,
In the month of January the pigeons met him
you have burned my entrails with fire, O Kanun!
You have set my insides on fire, O January
