بروحيَ مشروطٌ على الخدِّ أسمرٌ
دناhe drew near ووفىand kept his promise بعدafter التجنبavoidance والسخطand displeasure
دنا ووفى بعد التجنب والسخط
My soul for a dark-complexioned one, his cheek marked with a cut!
He drew near and kept his promise after avoidance and displeasure.
وقالand he said علىon اللثمkissing اشترطناwe stipulated فلاso do not تزدgo further
وقال على اللثم اشترطنا فلا تزد
فقبَّلتهso I kissed him ألفاًa thousand times علىon ذلكthat الشرطthe condition (also: the cut)
فقبَّلته ألفاً على ذلك الشرط
He said, “We agreed on kissing, so go no further.”
So I kissed him a thousand times, on that condition.
