وحملته الليالي فوقَ ما وسعا
Ah, what an eye—at daybreak it streamed with tears!
How wondrous the eye that streamed with tears at dawn!
The nights burdened it beyond all it could bear,
And the nights burdened it beyond what it could bear.

فيكم فما جفَّ من شوقٍ ولا هجعا
Divided between sleeplessness and weeping;
It is divided between sleeplessness and tears,
For you, it neither dried of longing nor slept.
for you—out of longing, it has neither dried nor slept.

Longing tries to beguile my eye away from its tears;
Longing beguiles my eye out of its tears.
The noble-hearted, when beguiled, lets himself be beguiled.
Indeed, a noble man is taken in when you deceive him.

Grief exacts my sleepless vigil as its due—ah, what a war,
And anxiety exacts my sleeplessness—alas for the ruin
Waged by two slayers united against my eye’s pupil!
from two killers united against the pupil of my eye!

Accursed be the day of parting! What did it hurl at my sight,
Away with the day of parting! What did it hurl at my eye,
Till it streamed with tears—and what did it wreak within my breast?
that it burst into tears—and what did it do to my heart?

To one who asked, “What was it that made you weep?” I said:
And someone asked, 'What made you weep?' I told him:
“A figure assailed my eye with separation, and so it wept.”
'Someone struck my eye with parting, and so it wept.'
