Bring back to us the sweetest evening talk, that we may renew it—
Bring back for us the sweetest evening talk, that we may renew it,
Dār al-Naḥḥās, the riverbank gathering place, and the club.
O House of al-Nahhas, riverbank meeting place, and assembly.

والضب والنون والملاّح والحادي
You see its ships journeying like camels,
You see its ships moving like pale camels,
with lizard and fish, sailor and camel-driver.
And the lizard and the fish, the boatman and the camel-driver.

And life’s garden in the heights, too proud
And the garden of life on the heights stands proud;
ever to link lowland-bound descent with highland-bound ascent.
It has not joined journeying to Tihama with journeying to Najd.

Three things make the world turn kindly toward me:
Three things through which the world looks kindly on me:
the homelands of my delight, my loved ones, and my feast-days.
The homes of my delight, my loved ones, and my feast days.

May the Feast delight you—O feast yourself, O mainstay
May the feast bring you joy, O feast and support
for all creation; in praise, they have transmitted my chain of authorities.
For all people; in praise they have transmitted my chain of authorities.

making a delegation’s mouth break its fast—or enemies’ livers break apart.
Feeding a delegation’s mouth to break its fast—or rending enemies’ livers:
O how far apart are mouths and livers!
Oh, how far apart are mouths and livers!

Yes—our master’s bounty appeared, and there confronted it
Indeed, our lord’s bounty appeared, and contending with it was
praise at its utmost effort; but precedence belonged to the one who began.
Praise’s utmost effort; yet the greater merit belonged to the initiator.
