    O doves of the valley at the mountain’s foot, surely nightingales

    stir the lovesick sufferer’s sorrow, though said to bring delight.

    وأينَ من المشتاقِ عنقاء مغرب

    I yearn for my family and long to meet them;

    yet how far from the yearning one is the elusive phoenix!

    And I eagerly seek wealth elsewhere than at the gate of one

    of whom Hope says, “This is the sound and proven one.”

    فيا حبَّذا من فضله الابن والأب

    The man of bounty, Yahya—his renown endures through you;

    so how fine, through his bounty, are the son and father!

    Yours is the fragrance of praise’s musk; remain a hope for me

    and for my family and children who have gone away.

    And even if they made one picture only Abu al-Misk,

    you are more desired within the heart, and sweeter.

    I served you as a panegyrist; why, then, do I see no wealth?

    And your kindness is unbroken—why should I not sing of love?
