قالوا عهدناك ذا شعرٍ نلذّ به
ماwhat بالهits condition قدindeed تولىhas departed حسنهُits beauty الآتيforthcoming
ما باله قد تولى حسنهُ الآتي
They said, 'We knew you as one whose verse delighted us.
What ails it, that its coming beauty has departed?'
فقلتُso I said منbecause of كُثرِthe frequency of ماthat (nominalizing particle) أشكوI lament بهِin it ضرراًsuffering
فقلتُ من كُثرِ ما أشكو بهِ ضرراً
والشعرُand poetry يفسدهspoils it كُثرُan excess of الضروراتnecessities; poetic licenses
والشعرُ يفسده كُثرُ الضرورات
So I said, 'Because I so often lament suffering in it—
and poetry is spoiled by too many necessities.'
