أسرت إلى سمعي غداة ترحلت
حديثاًa message إلىtoward حفظkeeping العهودthe pledges يشيرit points
حديثاً إلى حفظ العهود يشير
She whispered into my ear, the morning she departed,
a message urging that pledges be kept.
وهيَّجand stirred عنديin me قربnearness خدِّيmy cheek لخدِّهاto her cheek
وهيَّج عندي قرب خدِّي لخدِّها
بكىweeping فتلاقىso there met روضةٌa garden وغديرand a pool
بكى فتلاقى روضةٌ وغدير
And the nearness of my cheek to hers stirred in me
weeping, so a garden and a pool met.
أصبحhas become شمسShams (sun) العلىal-ʿUlā (eminence) فريداًpeerless
أصبح شمس العلى فريداً
فيin صنعتيهhis two disciplines بغيرwithout نكرdispute
في صنعتيه بغير نكر
Shams al-ʿUlā has become peerless
in his two disciplines, beyond dispute:
علمthe science of كلامٍtheology وعلمand the science of نحوٍgrammar
علم كلامٍ وعلم نحوٍ
فماso what is ابنIbn (son of) بحرٍBaḥr وماand what is ابنُIbn (son of) بريBarrī
فما ابن بحرٍ وما ابنُ بري
