May a man robbed of sleep, a fugitive from it, be your ransom.
A ransom for the one deprived of sleep, wandering
The torment of sorrow returns to him and visits him.
Sorrow recurs to him and returns to him

Whenever a lightning flash blazes in the charcoal-darkness of night,
When a flash lights up the darkness of night
It becomes clear within his breast where its fuel lies.
It shows in his heart where is its fuel

Its pearls scatter from the thread of his eyelids.
Its unique beads scatter from the lid of his eyes

For my tears a trace they never cease to drench.
The drawing of my tears that keeps pouring

Whenever his black pens are brandished upon the writing sheets.
When they brandished in the battlefields their blacks

How excellent, then, are our masters and his slaves!
So good are our masters and their servants

I saw Ibn Fadlallah the superior of his time
When I considered his words and his good fortunes.
If you consider his wording and its fortune

When the son of Ali and the son of Yahya argue
Then say: 'Pleasing glory's new gain and its ancient inheritance.'
Say the nimble glory and its renewal

It restored through a house of superiority organized
What a fine house, by God, he reclaims!
By God a good house that reclaims it

You looked, Abu al-Abbas, with a smiling glance
To the state of a man whom time almost destroyed
Upon the plight of a man whom fortune nearly destroyed.
And he was in the state of Al Hussein from sheltering

The eternity of the young man, praise is his eternity
The young man's immortality—for praise is his immortality.
So towards you from my hastily composed poem praising
فدونكso take منfrom نظميmy verse عجالةa hasty offering by مادحٍa praiser
إليكto you تناهىhas reached its end قصدهhis purpose وقصيدهand his poem
So take from my verse a praiser's hasty offering,
To you its intention and its poem arrive
Whose purpose and poem reach their culmination in you.
They say “Look at the one praised, agreeing with the praiser”
يقالit is said انْظرواlook الممدوحthe praised man وافقَmatched مادِحاًa praiser
فذاfor this one فاضلُthe most excellent of الدُّنياthe world وهذاand this one سعيدهits fortunate one
It is said: 'Look! The praised man has found a matching praiser:'
So this is the superior of the life and that is its happy one
For one is the world's most excellent man, and the other its fortunate one.
