ياO فاضلاًworthy man قدindeed عنىbowed لرتبتهto his rank
يا فاضلاً قد عنى لرتبته
جالبbringer درّpearls الثناpraise وناظمهand their stringer
جالب درّ الثنا وناظمه
O worthy man, before whose rank has bowed
O virtuous one who is renowned for his rank
the bringer and stringer of pearls of praise:
Bringing the pearls of praise and stringing them
ماwhat اسمname نحيفslender بالworn-out كأنas though علىupon أحشائهits entrails صبوةyearning تلازمهclings to it
ما اسم نحيف بال كأن على أحشائه صبوة تلازمه
يبكيweeps علىfor الوصلِunion وهوwhile it واجدهhas it
يبكي على الوصلِ وهو واجده
What is the name of a slender, worn thing, as though yearning clings to its entrails,
What a graceful name without equal as if pervading it is a pride that accompanies him
that weeps for union even while possessing it,
He weeps for the union while having it
وليسَand does not يبكيهِweep for it وهوwhile it عادمهlacks it
وليسَ يبكيهِ وهو عادمه
قلsay فيهabout it ماwhatever شئتyou wish إنif حذفتyou delete وإنand if
قل فيه ما شئت إن حذفت وإن
yet does not weep for it while lacking it?
And does not weep for it while lacking it
Say of it what you will, whether you delete or
Say about him what you wish if you omit or
حرَّفتyou alter ياO منone whom لسناwe do not نقاومهwe rival him
حرَّفت يا من لسنا نقاومه
alter, O you whom we cannot rival.
Distort, O one whom we do not resist
