O you whose cheek slays me, gloating over my blood,

A thousandfold exempt from complaint, and in a sanctuary.

Because of you, I was singled out for sleeplessness and tears, just as

Ibn Jadik was distinguished by piety and generosity,

And by the two beauties of outward form and character,

And by the two noble qualities of judgment and wisdom,

And by happiness in this world and the next,

And by eminence among Arabs and non-Arabs.

And O brother of virtue in both worlds, uniting them

In praise and reward: triumph in this and that, and endure.

O you whose speech and deeds are manifest, whom He instructed

In goodness—He who taught humankind with the pen.

    فحبّذا أنتم يا جيرَة العلم

    I have dwelt beside your praise through praise, embracing knowledge;

How excellent you are, then, O neighbors of knowledge!
