My body is the Abu Dharr of wasting sickness—so leave me

to recount to my loved ones the tale of my sorrows.

O you reproachers, your creed is yours

in enduring life without Layla; I have my own creed.

Since my passion's aloeswood breathed its fragrance in my Layla,

I am a follower of Majnun in love.

My day of longing for my Layla is a whole year:

summer is my heart, and winter my eyelids.

    أنا مقسمٌ بالنون والتنوين

    I would ransom her whose temple's edge bears a beauty spot;

I swear by the letter nun and nunation.

Her cheek holds gold; I call for its aid:

    O Egyptian, O Dhu al-Nun!

And by the sin of her forelock and her cheek's blaze,

long has my yearning lingered between her stature and the letter sin.

I greet the morning with love's prescribed anguish; and from

estrangement's edge, I pass the evening upon the sharpened blade.

And I loved her—like a garden, her beauty flourishes

as it will, for she is ever changing her colors.

I sell her my soul—what a garden she is,

yet, for all her spring rain's bounty, she will not buy me.

Love of a twenty-year-old has made one past six-

ty enter the decade of ninety.

I journey by night, as you commanded me to journey; how often, upon

my head and crown, you whittle me away with wasting sickness.

O Layla, gray hair has spat upon my cheek

only because of my abasement and humiliation in loving you.

Do not hasten to kill someone like me; I am

a slave—long may you live!—so reprieve him awhile.

I spent my life's past years in longing for you,

and on you I spend what remains—so let me.

There is nothing like my love poems for your beauty, nor

like my praise of Ala al-Din.

And yet my lot in passionate love and loyalty,

through rejection, is the lot of the wretched pauper.

A poor man's best offering is his tears; so contemplate

a grieving man's tear in my verse's clear flow.

What can my love poetry say of a beauty

of the desert, needing no adornment?

And what can my radiant panegyrics say of merits

of Ali, which rise above embellishment?

A lord of justice, whom the realms never lack, amid

    dark clouds in dark years.

And justice—how many a white banner

has risen with a clear dawn from his radiance!

flowing in the laden ship of his reed pen.

how much wealth finds its way to a right hand!

and its substance is too exalted for appraisal.

With inquiries that have dueled through incisive critiques,

and insights that have flirted with eyes.

one may well say of its learning, 'It teaches me to read.'
