    O parchment, kiss the dust of the lofty gate and say:

    My lord, may you ever bestow goodness in secret—

    rank and wealth, as you have long accustomed

    a man who had never before been mentioned.

    بالبعد تجعل بيت القلب مكسورا

    The family arrived, and estrangement turns things upside down;

    through distance, it leaves the heart’s house broken.

    And to all I wished—or did not wish—I sent

    your gifts, secretly and openly.

    Even the strangers grew to twice my family’s number,

    and the mistress of the house lay fallow among them.

    And I had hoped that sound intent would bring her,

    not them; so my mood is that of a joyless heart.

    وربما زاد سوءُ الحظّ تأخيرا

    And distance delayed conveying my complaint, out of shyness;

    and perhaps ill fortune added further delay.
