She charges with the swords of her eyelids and sheds blood.

Ah, the blood shed from the lid of my two eyes!

If she has enslaved my heart, then over humankind my verse

is made sovereign through praise of the Maliki imam.

O judge of judges, a luminary, peerless and noble,

O peerless one, my love for you is indeed idolatrous.

    فكان الندى بالجاهِ والشرط أملك

    You won my allegiance with generosity and set terms for me;

so generosity, with influence and those terms, held greater sway.

So may you be gladdened by the feasts as they convey joy

to you, as it threads its way through verses of praise.

And may the seeker of bounty ever—to that or to the fragrance

    of your praise—cling among humankind.
