نأى بك الشام يا خلي فقلت عسى
خلّa friend بمصرin Egypt إذاwhen suddenly بالموتwith death قدalready طرقَهcame knocking at him
خلّ بمصر إذا بالموت قد طرقَه
The Levant carried you far away, my friend, and I said, “Perhaps
a friend remains in Egypt”—when suddenly death had come knocking at his door.
ياO دهرTime أعدمتنيyou deprived me خلّينtwo friends رمتI sought فذاso this one
يا دهر أعدمتني خلّين رمت فذا
صلاحSalah; goodness صدقtrue; sincere لآماليfor my hopes وذاand this one صدقَهSadaqa; charity
صلاح صدق لآمالي وذا صدقَه
O Time, you deprived me of two friends I sought: this one was
Salah, a true fulfillment of my hopes, and the other Sadaqa.
