A slender-waisted beauty promised me a visit from her phantom,

if my eye could ever fall asleep.

O you whose phantom increases my sleeplessness—indeed,

the watchers feel safe from your visits in the dark.

O you for whose stature the lover prolongs

    his lament—you, a dusky lance.

I would ransom you, sun of forenoon; my tears are al-Nathra,

when you set, and my reproacher is al-Awwa, the Howler.

And many a cherished beauty is a paradise for the eyes,

    unveiled, yet misery for hearts.

She stained her wrists with a red like pure gold,

wrists like water in their luster and clarity.

    Ah, those dye-stained wrists!

Gold flowed over them, and water stood upright.

I yearn for anguish, knowing that

it pleases you for anguish to visit me again.

And the anguish of love it suffers is poured out

by my heart, while you are a deaf, unyielding lance.

How often beauty has brought a young man harm,

and how often beauty has brought happiness,

like the beauty of God's faith and the son of its Shihab:

where he is seen, there is neither injustice nor darkness.

The noble man who climbs the ranks of lordship—

al-Jawza has been jeweled by its nearness to him.

He is the one whose neighbor al-Suha has become,

yet the envier of his glory is al-Awwa, the Howler.

His generous deeds spread everywhere, and his renown traveled,

so every land has a blessing and praise.

His reed pen abounded in sustenance for humankind,

as though it were wells, and those provisions a well-rope.

And his judgment guarded the capitals; how often

the sword sat idle while counsels rose to act.

How wondrous the blazing fire of his intelligence,

while shadows themselves take shelter in his shade!

And his speech—whoever passes it round gains judgment

and understanding, though it is tawny wine.

    وكذا تكون الرَّوضةُ الغنَّاء

    The reed pen grew rich through him and displayed its page;

and such is the luxuriant garden.

O rider of firm resolves, desire's utmost goals

are Shihab al-Din's abode and al-Shahba.

He is the lord of glory: his arms, reaching for eminence, show no

shortcoming, nor does his resolve show weariness.

And justice restrains the powerful from harming the helpless,

so the sheep slumber beside the wolf.

And Jabir transmits forbearance on the authority of his bounty,

and Ata transmits bounty on the authority of his hands.

O most perfect of leaders, I make no exception

for anyone when the leaders are counted.

O you, for whom I have tired of repeating my praise, yet

your bounty has not tired of returning to me.

If the dues of what you have bestowed on me are not fulfilled

by my praises, I hope a prayer will fulfill them.

Your lofty attainments and generosity have borne witness

that humankind is earth, and you are sky.
