ونشيطةٌand a supple one الأعطافthe flanks إلاexcept أنهاthat she
ونشيطةٌ الأعطاف إلا أنها
بجفونهاwith her eyelids لثيابfor the garments سقميmy sickness تغزُّلshe spins
بجفونها لثياب سقمي تغزُّل
And one, supple of flank—yet she
With lithe limbs yet her eyelids
with her eyelids spins thread for the robes of my sickness.
Weave for my ailing self threads of yearning
بيتانtwo houses (also verses) منfrom قلبيmy heart ونظميand my verse ذاthis one لهاfor her
بيتان من قلبي ونظمي ذا لها
متغزّلexpressing love سكنتshe dwelt وذاand this one متغزّلexpressing love
متغزّل سكنت وذا متغزّل
Two homes—my heart and my verse: this one, for her,
Two verses from my heart and poetry for her
speaks of love, and she dwelt there; that one, too, speaks of love.
Yearning has dwelt, and yearning dwells still
ودموعand the tears قيسQays قيسcompared with دمعيmy tears بعدهاafter her
ودموع قيس قيس دمعي بعدها
كالبحرlike the sea عندbeside ندىbounty محمدMuhammad جدولa brook
كالبحر عند ندى محمد جدول
And Qays's tears, compared with mine after her departure,
Tears of Qays, Qays's tears thereafter
are a mere brook—as is the sea beside Muhammad's bounty.
Like the sea at the brook of Muhammad stream on
ملكa king سماrose high ونماand flourished وجادَand gave generously علىupon الورَىhumankind
ملك سما ونما وجادَ على الورَى
فليجتنواso let them gather fruit وليجتدواand let them seek gifts وليجتلواand let them behold
فليجتنوا وليجتدوا وليجتلوا
A king who rose high, flourished, and gave generously to humankind—
King of sky, slumber, and generosity to humankind
so let them gather fruit, seek gifts, and behold him.
So take joy, aspire, and rise high
ياO أيهاyou الملكthe king البسيطةthe earth أبحراًseas
يا أيها الملك البسيطة أبحراً
أهلthe people of الندىbounty وهوand he البسيطthe open-handed one الأوَّلthe foremost
أهل الندى وهو البسيط الأوَّل
O king, the earth has seas—
O king simple and boundless as the sea
the people of bounty—and he is foremost in open-handedness.
Of the tender dew, the first plain ode
أهلاًwelcome بمقدمكto your arrival السعيدauspicious وحبَّذاand how delightful
أهلاً بمقدمك السعيد وحبَّذا
عيشa life علىin رغمspite of الأعادِيthe foes مقبلapproaching
عيش على رغم الأعادِي مقبل
Welcome to your auspicious arrival, and how delightful
Greetings to you and welcome on your blessed arrival
the life ahead, despite the foes!
Living despite enemies, forward you go
طلعrose الهلالthe crescent ويُمنand the auspiciousness of وجهكyour face للورىfor humankind
طلع الهلال ويُمن وجهك للورى
يتفاضلانthe two vie in excellence وأنتand you أنتyou الأفضلthe better
يتفاضلان وأنت أنت الأفضل
The crescent has risen; it and the blessing of your face for humankind
The crescent rose and your face brings blessings
vie in excellence—and you, you are the better.
Excelling all, most excellent you remain
