أقيم عليها الحدّ من دون نفسها

أقيم عليها الحدّ من دون نفسها

And one is beaten for no crime, and sometimes

Battered without crime, perchance

The prescribed punishment is imposed on her, short of taking her life.

The limit enacted on her without herself.

لها من بيوت العرب بيت مجدّل

أديماً وعند العجم أكثر جنسها

أديماً وعند العجم أكثر جنسها

Among the Arabs' homes she has a home tightly plaited

She has from the houses of Arabs an honored abode

Of leather; most of her kind are among non-Arabs.

Always, and with non-Arabs most of her kind.

فتدخل فيه رأسها قبل رجلها

فتدخل فيه رأسها قبل رجلها

وتخرج منه رجلها قبل رأسها

وتخرج منه رجلها قبل رأسها

So she inserts her head into it before her foot,

So she enters head first before her leg

And withdraws her foot from it before her head.

And exits leg first before her head.

رباعية إن بدلوا ثانياً لها

فعدُّوا سنيناً تمضِ في كشف لبسها

فعدُّوا سنيناً تمضِ في كشف لبسها

Four-lettered: if they replace her second letter,

A quatrain—if they alter the second verse

Then count years, and you will advance in unraveling her mystery.

Count years passing in exposing its ambiguity.
