ونجلand a son منof بنيthe sons of الآدابletters; literature أفديI would ransom
ونجل من بني الآداب أفدي
حلاهhis charms بالصغيرwith the small وبالكبيرand with the great
حلاه بالصغير وبالكبير
And a son of the people of letters—I would ransom
Among the sons of culture I ransom
his charms with the small and the great.
Him, his charm enchants all ages
بوديit is my wish لوif نطقْتI spoke لهto him بوصفٍwith a description
بودي لو نطقْت له بوصفٍ
فأتىthen he brought بالمطرَّزwith al-Muṭarraz (the embroidered) والحريريand al-Ḥarīrī (the silken)
فأتى بالمطرَّز والحريري
I wish I could offer him a description,
How I wish to describe him in verse
and he would bring al-Muṭarraz and al-Ḥarīrī—the embroidered and the silken.
