    منها السهام وقلبي منه قرطاسي

    An eye whose brows shoot with bows;

from it come the arrows, and my heart supplies my target.

And atop my head are drops of sorrow's gray hair—

what has flowed from it, in sorrow, upon my head!

Yes, and the servant has thoughts at the gate of glory,

telling the servant, 'Far be it that his heart be hard!'

He has nurtured my bones and flesh on his kindness for

an age, and built devotion upon my foundation.

And how many houses of verse I have built of devotion and praise!

I wore away within them, yet they endured unworn.

If worry makes me forget my skill in them, you have not

lessened kindness to me, nor put my solace out of reach.

You are mankind itself; so it is right to say this:

So let people in this world treat people thus.
