كلall فعالdeeds العلاءal-ʿAlāʾ يعجبنيdelight me
كل فعال العلاء يعجبني
كأننيas though I were بالعلاءby al-ʿAlāʾ مفتونcaptivated
كأنني بالعلاء مفتون
All of al-ʿAlāʾ’s deeds delight me,
I admire every noble deed of the exalted one
As though I were captivated by al-ʿAlāʾ.
As if I am infatuated with the exalted one
يحمضُّturns sour بالمطلِwith delay حلوsweetness موعدهhis promise
يحمضُّ بالمطلِ حلو موعده
فوعدهfor his promise سكَّرٌsugar وليمونand lemon
فوعده سكَّرٌ وليمون
His promise’s sweetness turns sour with delay,
His sweet appointment at the window excites
For his promise is sugar and lemon.
His promise is sugar and lemon
فداًa ransom لابنfor the son of ريَّانRayyān الكرامthe noble فإنهfor indeed he
فداً لابن ريَّان الكرام فإنه
أخوa man of مننbounties يرويquenches the thirst of بهاwith them كلّevery ظمآنthirsty one
أخو منن يروي بها كلّ ظمآن
May the noble be a ransom for Ibn Rayyān, for he
Sacrifice myself for the son of generous Riyyan
Is a man of bounties, with which he quenches every thirsty one.
He is a brother who quenches every thirsty one
إذاwhen جالَroams فكريmy thought فيover تسرُّعswiftness جودهhis generosity
إذا جالَ فكري في تسرُّع جوده
تقولsay القوافيthe rhymes إنهindeed it is منfrom سليمانSulaymān
تقول القوافي إنه من سليمان
When my thought roams over the swiftness of his generosity,
When my thoughts wander in the hastening of his generosity
The rhymes say, 'It is from Sulaymān.'
The rhymes say he is from Solomon
