آهاً لشملٍ وقد وهى سلكهُ
وكانand it was ذاpossessed of دُرٍّa pearl بعبدin Abd الرحيمal-Rahim
وكان ذا دُرٍّ بعبد الرحيم
Alas for a union whose thread has grown weak!
Alas for a union that has passed away!
And it had a pearl in Abd al-Rahim.
It belonged to Abd al-Rahim, and was a pearl.
فليتنيso, if only I لاقيتُhad met منهfrom him الردىdeath
فليتني لاقيتُ منه الردى
وعاشand had lived ذاكthat الدّرّthe pearl درًّاas a pearl يتيمorphaned
وعاش ذاك الدّرّ درًّا يتيم
Would that I had met death through him,
Would that I had met with kindness from him!
And that pearl had lived on, an orphan pearl.
But that pearl lives lonely now, an orphan.
