أشار عليَّ الزين بالمرد لا النسا

فخالفته حتَّى انْقضى العمر في كدر

فخالفته حتَّى انْقضى العمر في كدر

Al-Zayn advised me to favor beardless youths, not women.

Al-Zain advised me against women, not life itself,

But I opposed him until my life was spent in distress.

But I disobeyed him until my life passed in sorrow.

فيا ليت أمِّي لم تلدني وليتني

فيا ليت أمِّي لم تلدني وليتني

رجعت إلى القول الذي قاله عمر

رجعت إلى القول الذي قاله عمر

Oh, would that my mother had not borne me, and would that I

Oh, would that my mother had not given birth to me! Would that

had returned to the words that Umar spoke.

I had returned to the words spoken by Umar!
