قديمة راحٍ في يمين حديثةٍ
منin السنّage عنon the authority of شيخthe elder of التصابيyouthful dalliance محدّثهa narrator
من السنّ عن شيخ التصابي محدّثه
Aged wine in the right hand of a young woman,
An old man walking with a young one on his right,
in years, telling tales from the elder of youthful dalliance.
Telling the youth stories of battles long ago.
تثنتshe swayed علىin رغمِspite of القلىaversion وتربعتand she sat cross-legged
تثنت على رغمِ القلى وتربعت
لوeven if صليwas scorched بحمىby the fever of العاذلاتthe reproaching women مثلثهthreefold
لو صلي بحمى العاذلات مثلثه
She swayed despite aversion and sat cross-legged,
She praised despite sore feet and sat down,
even if scorched by the reproaching women's threefold fever.
As if praying feverishly like a triangle.
فدًاa ransom لوزيرfor the vizier of الملكthe king ملبسclothed in صحةhealth
فدًا لوزير الملك ملبس صحة
لنارfor the fire of الأعاديthe enemies والجناةand the wrongdoers مؤرَّثَهkindled
لنار الأعادي والجناة مؤرَّثَه
A ransom for the king's vizier, clothed in health
Sacrificing for the king's minister dressed in health,
that leaves the fire of foes and wrongdoers kindled.
Against the fires of enemies and planted tombs.
ويمناًand good fortune علىupon مصرٍEgypt وشامٍand Syria أفاضهُhe poured it forth
ويمناً على مصرٍ وشامٍ أفاضهُ
وزيرa vizier of زمانٍthe age ساعدaided السعدgood fortune مبْعَثهhis coming
وزير زمانٍ ساعد السعد مبْعَثه
And good fortune he poured forth upon Egypt and Syria—
And good fortune on Egypt and Syria he granted,
a vizier of the age whose coming good fortune aided.
The minister of time has aided auspicious success.
وزيرٌa vizier لديهin his hands العقدbinding والحلّand unbinding راقناhe delighted us
وزيرٌ لديه العقد والحلّ راقنا
فماso no عقدةٌknot فيamong الحاسدينthe envious منفّثهblown upon
فما عقدةٌ في الحاسدين منفّثه
A vizier who holds binding and unbinding has delighted us;
A minister who holds the knots and solutions satisfied us,
so no knot among the envious is blown upon.
No knot remains in the envious he has untied.
أخوbrother to السعدgood fortune فيin كلall الأمورthe affairs أرادهاhe desired them
أخو السعد في كل الأمور أرادها
يهذّبhe sets right ماwhat كانwas الزمانtime قدalready أحدَثهit brought it about
يهذّب ما كان الزمان قد أحدَثه
Brother to good fortune in every undertaking he desired,
The brother of Saeed in all affairs he intended,
he sets right what time had brought about.
Refines what time itself had altered.
نهنيwe congratulate بلقياهon seeing him حمىthe domain of مصرEgypt إنهاindeed it
نهني بلقياه حمى مصر إنها
بغيبتهِin his absence حاشاmay … be spared المزاجthe constitution مغلّثهstricken with mixed fever
بغيبتهِ حاشا المزاج مغلّثه
We congratulate Egypt's domain on seeing him, for it
We congratulate meeting Egypt’s fever, it
in his absence—may its constitution be spared—is stricken with mixed fever.
In his absence, never may its temper be tangled.
