  1. صناعةُ النظم تجنَّبتها

    وذاك يا منيتي الواجب

    I have avoided the craft of verse-making,

    And that, O my heart’s desire, is what I must do.

  2. بحر العطايا قد نحا غيرنا

    فأنتَ بورى وأنا هارِب

    The sea of gifts has turned toward others than us,

    So you are a mullet, and I am fleeing.
