He whose hours sorrow occupied would have prospered,

had sorrow sated him throughout his hours.

Oh, if only sleep were his livelihood,

as a dream-phantom, and daylight were not his slumber.

A carat of union I would place upon

a quintal of estrangement, changing its very nature.

O master of men of letters, without doubt, indeed,

one who knew no grievance against you has repaid you.

Look to your two friends, who have fought

in letters, and grant them both what each has missed.

    Whoever was of straw—his shoots flourished;

or was of stone—you softened his hard rock.

Pardon him whose mountain your gifts shook,

and him whose plants the dew of your hands sent reeling.
