    Had my verses not voiced an elegy for you,

    My flowing tears would have mourned you with pearls on my behalf.

    فأنتَ في جنَّةٍ والقوم في نار

    O dweller in eternity, you have bequeathed burning anguish to mankind;

    So you are in Paradise, while the people are in fire.

    لقد عوَّضت عن جارٍ وعن دار

    You have become your Lord's neighbor in the gardens, drawn near;

    You have indeed been recompensed for a neighbor and a home.

    Sleep peacefully: sleeplessness is inescapable

    For us over you, and no heart can bear it patiently.

    I shall never forget your constant kindness to petitioners,

    In days when no petitioner could find supporters.

    I shall never forget your abundant gifts to visitors,

    When the stranger railed against his days.

    I shall never forget your presence in the lofty gathering, as

    Dhukāʾ, the sun, outshines meteors and moons.

    I shall never forget your right hand bestowing bounty, concealing

    That bounty until it seemed as though bounty were a disgrace.

    I shall never forget your pens, with which you hastened,

    Truly longing to obey the Creator.

    Alas for you—for the distressed and the stranger,

    Whose longing for kin and home your nearness soothed.

    Alas for you—for your ornamented words,

    Which the clan sings, or the night traveler chants to his camels.

    A prayer niche wept at your loss, as though the radiance

    Of its lamp, within its bosom, were a fire of remembrance.

    And a copy of the Qur'an whose heart spent the night lamenting in grief,

    Split among sections and ten-verse portions.

    And a scroll in which pearls once lay strung

    Upon the bosoms of ears and eyes.

    And a petition that held relief for one waiting,

    At your hands, and ease after hardship.

    And a gathering where, through generosity and piety, you were

    More worthy of being called Ibn Dīnār.

    May you never be far away—for how many noble deeds you left,

    Like rain that passed, leaving bountiful traces.

    وإن ثويت فذكرٌ جدّ سيَّار

    If you have departed, your kindness is very near;

    And if you rest, your memory travels far and wide.

    How heedless people are of this, and how oblivious

    To a watering place that has never sent anyone back!

    وا قلةَ الحول في حجرٍ وأحجار

    A grave is raised, and allotted lifespans are firmly fixed;

    Alas, how little power there is in reason and stones!

    And a claimant from our creditor, death, lies in wait for us,

    While we fret over scarcity and abundance.

    While the youth reveled in safety, suddenly there appeared

    Crescent moons bearing death, armed with claws.

    As though each crescent, at its rising,

    Were a bow demanding souls for blood-debts.

    Where are those who attained what they attained, then lay

    As hostages among graves and rags?

    Where is al-ʿAlāʾ, whose noble deeds

    The angels would ask to hear recounted in their nightly talk?

    Where is he through whose kindness I used to seek refuge

    In shades of bounty and fruit?

    I now graze upon the traces of his bounty,

    And my tears are amid gardens and rivers.

    O son of the Prophet, take solace if distress appears,

    For such is the custom of this abode.

    فكيف ننكر أن يرثى بأكدار

    A person's origin is traced to water and clay;

    So how can we find it strange that he is mourned with sorrows?

    والله يعلم ما في طيّ إضماري

    I say this as though I could patiently bear his absence;

    But God knows what lies in the folds of my hidden thoughts.
