فإذا جريت وراءه أتعثَّر

Fortune—its paths of approach have grown rugged;

ولقد يصبرني على ما ألتقي

حال وها أنا كالقتيل مصبر

حال وها أنا كالقتيل مصبر

What steels me to endure all I encounter

And indeed, I am made to endure what I encounter

is my plight: here I am, like a victim bound for death.

by my plight—and here I am, like a man bound and slain.
