بين أجفان ابن عمرو وسواد

دائرٌ في كلّ عقل بخمر

دائرٌ في كلّ عقل بخمر

Between Ibn ʿAmr’s eyelids is blackness—and Sawād

Between the eyelids of Ibn ʿAmr and Sawād,

goes circling through every mind with wine;

Circling in every mind with wine;

كلما طافَ على الصبّ غنى

كلما طافَ على الصبّ غنى

إسقنيها يا سواد بن عمرو

إسقنيها يا سواد بن عمرو

whenever he made the rounds among the companions, he sang:

Whenever he came round to the lovesick one, he sang:

“Give it to me to drink, O Sawād ibn ʿAmr!”

“Give it to me to drink, O Sawād ibn ʿAmr.”
