يا سيدَ الوزراء الأكرمين ومن
قدindeed وافقhas matched الخبرَfirsthand knowledge فيin عليائهhis exalted stature الخبرُthe report
قد وافق الخبرَ في عليائه الخبرُ
O master of the noblest viziers—and you, of whom
O master of the most noble ministers, and you whose
in your exalted station, report accords with report—
reported eminence has matched firsthand knowledge,
الغيثthe rain والوحلand the mud عذريmy excuse إنif قعدتI stayed behind فمنso for
الغيث والوحل عذري إن قعدت فمن
ذنبthe fault of السماءheaven وذنبand the fault of الأرضthe earth أعتذرI apologize
ذنب السماء وذنب الأرض أعتذر
Rain and mire are my excuse, if I stayed behind; for
Rain and mud are my excuse if I have stayed away; so for
it is for heaven’s fault and earth’s fault that I apologize.

والجبرand the mending منfrom خلقكyour character الوضاحthe radiant أجعلهI make it
والجبر من خلقك الوضاح أجعله
لِماfor what علىupon ذِمتيmy pledged obligation فيin القصدthe intended visit ينكسرis broken
لِما على ذِمتي في القصد ينكسر
And I assign the mending to your radiant character
And I draw on your radiant character to mend
for whatever duty I owe that breaks in the endeavor.
