A passionate lover remembered his family and his sons;
A lovesick man remembered his family and his sons.
he intended a journey—but to God belongs the will.
He resolved on a journey, and the will belongs to God.
وصوَّرَand pictured فكرهhis mind للبينfor departure ركباًa caravan
فبادرَso outpaced جفنthe eyelid of عينيهhis two eyes المزادهthe waterskin
His thought pictured a caravan for the parting,
And his mind pictured a caravan for departure;
and his eyelids raced the waterskin.
So his eyelids outpaced the waterskin.

One such as I may well weep to leave a gate
And one like me would weep at leaving a gate,
of exalted deeds, excellent and acclaimed.
ʿAlāʾī in its much-admired deeds.

The coursers of the horizon serve its visitors
The horizon’s wandering stars serve his visitors,
with providential favor, while happiness follows them.
With success, and good fortune follows them.

ولاnor عبثthe frivolity of الوليدal-Walīd (‘the child’) أباO father of عبادهʿUbāda
My naming Ḥabīb in them is no mourner’s lament,
So my remembrance, O Ḥabīb, does not weep for them,
nor did al-Walīd trifle, O Abū ʿUbāda.
Nor is it al-Walīd’s frivolity, O Abū ʿUbāda.
