From the revolving sphere of praise, you have been served

by the brightest stars, with every dazzling meaning.

O builder of the two sanctuaries, through aspirations

whose telling has filled the tongue of the one who recounts them.

You have built what endures, and its renown travels

across the earth—marvel at what stays yet journeys.

And you built up every house of worship there,

so praise came with every well-built verse.

I swear: if excellence had a form like yours,

you would occupy within it the place of the eye's pupil.

You are he whose excellence encompassed all beauties,

so his inward excellence matched the outward.

You fed fasting mouths, seeking nearness to God,

and struck your foes' livers with a cleaving weapon.

And you raised the smoke of hospitality for your guests,

and met the offenders' guilt with forgiveness.

So rejoice in the happy Eid, enjoying

piety's treasures—and what treasures they are!

But for you, hope would have had no strength

with which to face time, nor any champion.

So, by your hands' bounty, but for you I would not

now have called myself by the name of poet.

But you scattered noble deeds, which I strung together

into praises: thus a versifier has spoken for a scatterer.

May you be repaid on my behalf with praise, as

the gardens' breath repays the dew of the morning cloud.

If my circumstances have told of you as a benefactor,

then surely my soul speaks of one who heals.

O you, on the way to whose refuge I praised rocky paths

that were traversed—even had I traversed my own eye sockets.

Take it for yourself—an improvisation I have kept free

of a dusky maiden's figure and a languid glance.

Your beautiful merits appeared, so I approached them

by describing noble eminence in clear words.

And through them praise's easy ground drew near, so I did not say:

"How far between the outskirts of al-ʿUdhayb and Ḥājir!"
