خوف امتنان لا يليق بمحسن

خوف امتنان لا يليق بمحسن

A young man forgets the kindness he showed in the past,

The youth forgets his kindness of the past

For fear of reminding others of his favors—unseemly in a benefactor.

Fearing obligation unfit for the benefactor

وأراك زدت معي على هذا الثنا

وأراك زدت معي على هذا الثنا

فنسيت إحساناً مضى ونسيتني

فنسيت إحساناً مضى ونسيتني

And I see you have taken this praised conduct further with me:

Yet I see you have outdone me in this regard

You forgot a kindness past—and you forgot me.
