A whisper grown sweet, unlike other whispers;
Obsession is no solution, not obsession
Its slinking tempter and mine are alike.
The sneaky and the honest are the same
حبّستI endowed أغزاليmy love poems علىupon حسنهاher beauty
حبّست أغزالي على حسنها
فياand oh لهfor it ديوانa register أحباسendowments
فيا له ديوان أحباس
I have endowed my love poems to her beauty;
I imprisoned my gazelles for their beauty
And what a register of endowments it is!
What a wonderful prison of loved ones
تحبيسendowing آماليmy hopes علىupon راحتيْthe two palms of
تحبيس آمالي على راحتيْ
سعدSa'd التقىpiety والجودand generosity والباسand valor
سعد التقى والجود والباس
As I endow my hopes upon the two palms
Imprisoning my hopes for my comfort
Of Sa'd of piety, generosity, and valor—
Saad met benevolence, generosity and intimacy
الصاحبthe vizier المربيsurpassing علىbeyond ماwhat روىone recounted
الصاحب المربي على ما روى

The vizier, surpassing what is recounted
The friend who raised me as Ibn Abbad reported

ياO باسمsmiling البشرcheerful countenance الذيwho فضلهhis bounty
يا باسم البشر الذي فضله
يعيدهrepeats it الفضلal-Fadl ابنson of عبَّاس'Abbas
يعيده الفضل ابن عبَّاس
O you of smiling countenance, whose bounty
O the finest of mankind whom preference distinguished
Al-Fadl ibn 'Abbas repeats.
Whom the preference of the son of Abbad returned
إنif أنسَI forget مدحيmy praise لكof you يوماًone day فماthen not
إن أنسَ مدحي لك يوماً فما
نسيتhas forgotten جدوىbounty قدمكyour foot الناسيthe forgetful one
نسيت جدوى قدمك الناسي
If one day I forget my praise of you,
If my praise forgot you one day, I never
Your foot's bounty has not forgotten the forgetful one.
Forgot the benevolence of your helping hand
قلtell لبنيto the sons of الدنياthis world ألاbehold هكذاthus
قل لبني الدنيا ألا هكذا
فليصنعso let ... act الناسpeople معwith الناسpeople
فليصنع الناس مع الناس
Tell the sons of this world: behold, this is how
Tell the people of this world, not like this
People should deal with people.
People should act this way with people
