A waterwheel arose in the age of sorrow,
A fountain built in days of woe like mine
Like me, it never ceases to groan in pain.
Will ever mourn and tears its flood will rain

Before that, it was a flourishing branch;
Once but a rod, a branch within a grove,
In a grove, it grew in a favored spot.
It grew where sorrow made the soil attain

Doves mourned there, and sorrow made me weep;
The dove bemoaned it, and recalled my pain
So it learned the doves' lament and my tears.
I learned the dove's sad song, the tearful sign
