جوابٌa reply أتانيَcame to me فيin ساعةan hour
جوابٌ أتانيَ في ساعة
يدلّindicates علىto نفثbreathing forth; spitting أصلthe root اليراعهof the reed pen
يدلّ على نفث أصل اليراعه
A reply came to me within an hour,
An answer came to me in an hour
revealing what the reed pen's root had breathed forth.
That showed the essence of delight
ومنand among عجبthe wonders الدّهرof time أنيthat I بهin it
ومن عجب الدّهر أني به
تلذّذتfound delight معdespite أنهits being سمّthe poison ساعهof a sāʿah tree (punning on 'hour')
تلذّذت مع أنه سمّ ساعه
And among time's wonders is that in it
And of the wonders of fate that I
I found delight, though it was a sāʿah tree's poison.
Took pleasure in it, though it was poisoned delight
