طيفٌ تصيدته والليل محتبك
منfrom حليةthe adornment of الشهبthe bright stars أوor منfrom شعرهhis hair الحبكthe woven curls
من حلية الشهب أو من شعره الحبك
A phantom I caught while the night was interwoven
A specter I hunted, in the tangled night,
With starry jewels, or with his hair's woven curls.
Of shooting stars or of plaited hair.

يا حبَّذا الظبي أو يا حبَّذا الشرك
You walk among the tresses, within their snares;
Between the curls she walks in her snares,
O, how lovely the gazelle—or, O, how lovely the snare!
Either a lovely gazelle or evil company.

عجبت من لائمٍ هتكي على قمر

الشمس منه على الحيطان تنهتك
I marvel at one who censures my lost modesty over a moon;
I wonder at the blamer unveiling the moon,
The sun, because of him, is laid bare upon the walls.
The sun from it stains the walls.

Veiled: the reproachers do not see him, nor do I
Veiled, unseen by passionate lovers,
Listen to them, whether they speak truth or lie.
Nor listening though they plead and untie.

If only they had seen him, and I had listened to them,
Would they but look and listen to me
And they had freed me from his eyelids and become entangled themselves.
And free me from my lids and disentangle!

I weep, and my weary reproacher asks me
I weep while my weary critic wants me.
To forget my love; his reasoning makes laughter seize me.
I jest so he takes me in his laughter.

How can I forget love for a full moon, when I consented
How jest, when love of the full moon I accepted
To suffer because of him while he is engrossed in pleasures?
To suffer, while it revels in delight?

If the Turks, his people, knew that I had
If the Turks but knew I compared it
Likened him to the full moon, they would spare nothing and leave nothing.
To the full moon, they would leave naught remaining.

A prince of beauty, as we have said, a prince of piety
Prince Hasan, as we said, prince of piety,
In Syria, and a king over its gray city, Aleppo.
In Syria, while its stars are under his dominion.

يوم العطاء ويوم البؤس إن فتكوا
The kings' sword and their mainstay when they give,
Sword of kings, suffice them when they are wronged
On the day of bounty, and the day of distress if they strike ruthlessly.
On days of grace and days of rage if they attack.

We, in meeting him—if we perish at parting from him—
At losing him we perish, O sea of dew,
Are as though we were fish, O sea of generosity.
As though we fish within you were obliterated.

They said, 'Praise him'; I said, 'Inarticulacy is an excuse.'
They said "Praise him" and I said "The blind have excuse."
They said, 'Then take pearls from his graces; they will string themselves.'
They said "Take from his ornaments a path you thread!"

أمداحه من عطاه أو فضائله

His praises come from his bounty or his virtues,
His praises are from his gifts or merits -
As though they had cast his praises from his raw gold.
As though his praises from aloes were molded.

من حيٍّ أو يهلك الأعدا بما هلكوا
Lord of bounty and might—how many he gives life to with clear proof,
The generous, the valiant, so he gives life
Among the living, or destroys foes through what brought their doom.
To the living in his land, or kills the hostile horde.

أنَّ النجوم عليه في الدجى شبك
One who flies in fear of his awe-inspiring presence imagines
Who fled in fear of his awe
That the stars over him in the darkness are a net.
Thinks the stars above mesh him in the gloom.

By day he sees horses doubling
As though the mature steeds' shadows behind them were mares.
As though their shadows behind them were rippling.

Thus Syria is like the sanctuary, its birds safe;
Syria is like the inviolate sanctuary
In it are hopes, and in it righteousness and devotion.
Wherein is security, righteousness and devotion.

Blessings—and in Aleppo their nursing breasts overflow;
Bounty! And in Aleppo its springs overflow
Khwarazm's bounty contends like rain-bearing stars.
With the harvest of Khwarazm like highland pools,

And rain pours down: no drought, no hunger;
While rain spares no place, no dry valley bed,
And safety enfolds all: no fear, no pursuit.
And security embraces, no fear, no perdition.

If he gives, the rain clouds pour upon those seeking bounty;
When he is generous, hands in the prosperous spill over,
Or if he charges, blood is spilled among the aggressors.
Or when he campaigns, blood in the hostile runs over.

And the realm of al-Nasir, the sultan, flourishes,
The state of the Victorious Sultan blossoms,
And auspicious stars kneel upon its cities.
And the Saudis upon its realms have blessing.

The king's enemies were like a serpent; then they made peace,
The tyrants were like snakes, so they reconciled,
And some were like fleas, and were rubbed to pieces.
Some others were like fleas, so they scattered.

When their pawn becomes a chess vizier among the tyrants,
When his gun discriminates among oppressors
Then his head rolls in the dust of death.
His head by the dust of doom is riddled.

Chosroes is broken by the gray-bright realm,
Chosroes of the august kingdom is frustrated,
Of old; and Caesar is entangled in his shortcomings.
Stumbling, and Caesar by his failing confounded.

Thus the security it brings builds beyond all their toil,
So safety inhabits it beyond their exhaustion,
And terror wards foes from it beyond all their slaughter.
And terror deters it beyond their violence.

You are son of kings in service to him
Have offered from their holdings all the lives they possessed.
Who ahead of you gave their souls in subjection.

You are the first Bedouins who grew up
With lions; in the thickets you share their haunts.
Sharing with the Huns in the thickets.

And kneel like sacrificial camels in the bowls of hospitality.
And in the cheeks of the villages like vipers bite.

Red in their bounty are the thousands they have given,
Bay-colored, thousands they gave in largesse
As though they had spilled the blood of the purses.
As though for blood of slain they had poured out.

O you, by whose cord of allegiance or gifts,
O you who by the cord of his governorship
And by the musk of whose praise, whoever clings has prospered:
Or gifts of munificence succeeded and held fast!

To mend it—a praise-poem that, without you, would not have been strung
Forced is the ode - had it not been for you
Into verse with which people traveled, whatever path they took.
No verse would have threaded this pearling.

How many like it I spoke in youth's garden, and how many
How many such have I composed in the garden of youth,
Others have spoken; then the flowers stood apart from the thorns.
And how many others, so the flowers blossomed!

I shortened my verse, but it is choice;
My stringing of verse is brief - yet it is cream,
Others lengthened theirs, but muddled it.
While others prolong - mere sobbing and crying.

Nor were a faction's wishes fulfilled;
The subtleties of genius have not been fulfilled
The sweetness of my words said, 'Indeed, they have chewed gum.'
By those who said: "His phrases are so sweet they enticed!"

So let one burdened by a family be excused now;
Let one overwhelmed by dependents be excused now,
Neither silence nor activity does them any good.
Silence, not movement, befits their glory.

In the letters of words his spirit circles,
Yet not a jaw of theirs moves over a single letter.
But no letter revolves for them evenly.

I die of grief when I witness their condition,
I die of sorrow when I regard their state;
And my death comes only from these Turks.
By God, death is not but this unlinking!

I saved their provisions from their enemies' tricks
And was absent from them—no, by God, they were not spared.
And was absent from them - no, by God, they left nothing!

I have opponents, but do not complain of them now -
But tomorrow they will know where complaints against them were lodged.
Tomorrow they will know where they erred!

While people's fortunes are convulsed.

As though it were a star, and tradition a sphere.
